Breathe, Sleep, and Live a Quality Life with TMD Treatment

Do you experience constant headaches and jaw pain? These may be related to temporomandibular joint disorder (TMD), a common oral condition that affects the two hinge-like joints on your face. These joints connect your jawbone to your skull and play a crucial role in talking, chewing, and other jaw movements. When they become inflamed or dysfunctional, they can lead to significant pain and a range of disruptive symptoms.

No one deserves to live in pain. Kelli Brady, DDS, specializes in diagnosing and treating TMD to help you find relief. Dr. Kelli Brady can help you restore comfort and live a pain-free life through personalized and effective care.

What is TMJ disorder?

TMJ disorder is a group of conditions affecting the jaw joint and surrounding muscles, nerves, and ligaments. This oral condition manifests as jaw pain but radiates to the surrounding areas, such as the neck, upper back, and head. TMJ pain can range from mild discomfort to excruciating pain, affecting everyday.

Common symptoms of TMD include:

  • Jaw pain and tenderness
  • Earaches
  • Ringing in the ears (tinnitus)
  • Constant headaches
  • Pain in the face, shoulders, and upper back
  • Joint immobilization, causing difficult opening and closing of the mouth
  • Unusual clicking and popping sounds when opening and closing the mouth

TMJ pain can result from several factors, but the most common is chronic teeth grinding (bruxism). When you grind or clench your teeth—typically at night—the intense, repetitive pressure significantly strains the jaw muscles and temporomandibular joints (TMJs), leading to inflammation, soreness, and ongoing joint pain. Other causes of TMJ pain include jaw misalignment, arthritis, dental trauma, and prolonged stress.

How is TMJ pain treated?

TMJ pain can diminish the quality of life. We never want you to live even a day without feeling like yourself. Dr. Brady treats TMJ pain with a custom-fitted device that prevents clenching and grinding your teeth. An occlusal splint helps your jaw joints relax, reducing pain after a few days.

Getting used to your splint requires just a few days. In the first few days, you may notice increased saliva production as your tongue gets used to a foreign body in the mouth.

We may also use Botox to relax the overactive muscles that cause bruxism and TMJ-related pain. Dr. Brady can combine Botox and customized appliances to provide much-needed relief.
